# Limited Warranty > Serin Labs warranty terms: a one-year limited hardware warranty against manufacturing defects on every product, with replacement or refund and US shipping covered both ways. This page states those terms in plain language. Orders delivered elsewhere are covered under shipping on a claim below. ## What the warranty says Serin Labs warrants that a product sold by Serin Labs, on this site or through our Etsy shop, is free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for one year from the date of its original delivery. This is a limited warranty. ### What is covered - The product and every part that ships in its box, as listed in the table above. - A failure caused by a defect in materials or workmanship under normal use, installed and operated as the product's instructions describe. - A unit with no physical damage that official firmware cannot recover. See firmware and updates below. ### What is not covered - Accidental damage and damage caused by the customer, including drops, crushing, liquid, and damage from opening or modifying a product. - Normal wear and cosmetic changes that do not affect how the product works, including scratches, scuffs, and fading. 3D-printed parts show fine layer lines and can differ slightly in color from one unit to the next. That is how the parts are made and is not a defect. - Damage from connecting a product to a port, terminal, or power source other than the one its instructions describe, or from installing it somewhere the [safety and installation](https://serin-labs.com/safety.html) page rules out. - Damage or a malfunction caused by custom or incorrect firmware. Installing firmware does not by itself cancel coverage of an unrelated hardware fault. - Batteries, which are consumables. The wireless room sensor's battery is covered only to arrive in working order. - A product that was not originally sold by Serin Labs. ### Serin Link The terms above apply to the Serin Link, along with these points that are specific to it. - **Screen.** Dead pixels, lines across the display, a screen that stays dark, and a touchscreen that stops responding are covered. Image retention or burn-in that develops gradually with use is a known characteristic of AMOLED displays and is not covered. To keep the screen dark while the Link is idle, set Idle screen to Off in its [settings](https://serin-labs.com/link/settings.html). - **Knob.** A knob that stops registering turns or presses is covered. A change in how the knob feels after use is normal wear. - **Charger and cable.** If the USB-C wall charger or the USB-C cable fails and the Link itself is working, we mail a replacement for that part. There is nothing to send back. ### Multi-Zone Controller The terms above apply to the Multi-Zone Controller, whether the system is in a home or in a commercial building, along with these points that are specific to it. - **Hardware only.** The warranty covers the product and the shipping described below. It does not cover the cost of installing, removing, or reinstalling the controller, a technician's service call, or time the system spends out of service. - **Weather and moisture.** The controller is mounted indoors or inside the equipment's own enclosure, as the [safety and installation](https://serin-labs.com/safety.html) page describes. Damage from rain, condensation, or direct sun is not covered. - **Lightning and power surges.** Damage from lightning, or from a voltage surge on the transmission wiring or the building's electrical supply, is not covered. - **Wrong terminals.** The bus cable connects only to the two-wire transmission terminals. Damage from connecting it to any other terminals, including the line-voltage terminals in the same enclosure, is not covered. - **Faults in the system.** Damage caused by a fault in the equipment the controller is wired to is not covered. - **Cradle and bus cable.** If the mounting cradle or the bus cable fails and the controller itself is working, we mail a replacement for that part. There is nothing to send back. ### Who can make a claim The warranty stays with the product for its one-year period. If the product was a gift, or a contractor bought and installed it for you, you can make a claim yourself with the original order number. A change of owner does not extend the period, which always runs from the original delivery. ### What we will do If a covered defect appears within the one-year period, Serin Labs will replace the product or refund it, at our choice. There is no paid repair service, and replacement parts are not sold separately, so a covered product is made right by replacement or refund rather than by repair. The one exception is a separate accessory: where only the Serin Link's charger or cable, or the Multi-Zone Controller's cradle or bus cable, has failed, we replace that part on its own. A replacement, whether a whole product or a single part, is covered for the rest of the original one-year period or for 90 days from its delivery, whichever is longer. ### Shipping on a claim For an order delivered in the United States, Serin Labs pays shipping in both directions on a covered claim. For an order delivered outside the United States, Serin Labs pays to ship the replacement. In most cases we will not ask for the failed product back. If we do, you pay the return postage. Any duties or import fees charged on the replacement are yours to pay, as the [store policies](https://serin-labs.com/policies.html) describe for international orders. ### How to make a claim Use the [contact form](https://serin-labs.com/contact.html) with the original order number and a description of the problem, including what you have already tried. For an Etsy order, you can also message the shop on Etsy. We reply within 2 business days and will confirm what to send back, if anything, before you ship it. If a controller does not respond, start with the [troubleshooting guide](https://serin-labs.com/troubleshooting.html) first, because a charge-only USB cable is the most common cause. For a Serin Link, start with [Serin Link troubleshooting](https://serin-labs.com/link/troubleshooting.html). ### Firmware and updates The firmware is free, and updates carry no charge or subscription. If an installation through the Serin Labs browser flash tool with the correct official image fails, or an official signed over-the-air update fails, contact us and we will walk you through recovery over USB. Most software failures are recovered this way. If official firmware cannot bring back a unit that has no physical damage, we treat it as a warranty claim. Firmware you install yourself is your choice to make. Running firmware other than an official Serin Labs image does not by itself cancel coverage of an unrelated hardware fault, but damage or a malfunction caused by custom or incorrect firmware is not covered. ### Your legal rights This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. Any implied warranty, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, is limited to the one-year duration of this written warranty. Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. Serin Labs is not liable for incidental or consequential damages arising from the product or from a breach of this warranty. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty is governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, United States. ## How this page fits with the store policies and terms The [store policies](https://serin-labs.com/policies.html) apply to every order and are the first place to look for shipping, cancellations, returns, and refunds. Their 30-day return window and their commitment on damaged, defective, or incorrect items stand on their own; this warranty adds a year of coverage on top. Where both a return window and this warranty apply, you may use whichever suits you.
