Confirm normal heat-pump control works before adding a sensor. See [how temperature control works](https://serin-labs.com/controller/temperature.html) for source dependencies and fallback.

## Choose and place a sensor

All three firmware options support direct Bluetooth readings; supported thermometers and setup differ by firmware.

Place the thermometer near seating height, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and the indoor unit's airstream.

Crossed thermometers show three places to avoid: direct sunlight, beside a heater, and in the indoor unit’s airflow.](https://serin-labs.com/assets/diagrams/room-sensor-placement.svg)](https://serin-labs.com/assets/diagrams/room-sensor-placement.svg)

## Use the controller's sensor settings

With HomeKit-compatible or Matter-compatible firmware, [configure a Bluetooth room sensor](https://serin-labs.com/controller/sensors-web.html) in the web interface. Choose one source or average selected remote sources. For Serin Link, see [Serin Link as the temperature source](https://serin-labs.com/controller/link.html#sensor).

## Choose an ESPHome sensor route

A Bluetooth proxy forwards readings to Home Assistant; direct sensor configuration reads them on the controller.

### Included Govee thermometer

[Add the thermometer to Home Assistant](https://serin-labs.com/controller/sensors-home-assistant.html#esphome-govee) using a Bluetooth adapter or the controller's proxy, then forward its temperature.

### An existing Home Assistant sensor

[Use a temperature entity](https://serin-labs.com/controller/sensors-home-assistant.html) from Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth or another integration. Home Assistant must remain available.

### A Bluetooth thermometer read directly

[Configure direct Bluetooth reading in ESPHome](https://serin-labs.com/controller/sensors-esphome.html). This needs custom YAML for the sensor and works without Home Assistant forwarding readings.

### A paired Serin Link

[Use Serin Link as the room sensor](https://serin-labs.com/controller/link.html#sensor). Select it as the source after pairing; readings go directly to the controller.

## Check the reading and control

Compare the controller's room reading with your selected source, then check that a climate command reaches the indoor unit.

If the indoor unit reports no temperature with its built-in sensor, follow [CN105 troubleshooting](https://serin-labs.com/troubleshooting.html#cn105) before changing the sensor configuration.
